Week 5: I left my <3 in London - Week 5 - I left my heart
For week five's project this New Englander traveled to "Old" England for the first time ever. I had a couple opportunities to go take photos while I was there and I'm working my way through those sets picking and fixing my favorites. When I saw this photo, I knew it was the one to show exactly where I left my heart this week.

• Two Wheels - Week 16: "How do you get from point A to B" - I recently upgraded my road bike to a sweet new carbon-fiber framed racing bike. I would love to say that I ride it to work and home again. Seeing as how I work out of my home, I guess that's true every time I go for a ride. Anyway, I had plans of photographing the new ride against a sunset backdrop and lighting up the frame with a speedlight, but the night I went out to shoot I had a light failure and, as luck would have it, no sunset view either. Still, I did take this nice photo of the flight deck against the rail trail so you all can see how I travel in style.
• My front door - Week 2: "Your front door"- I tried a number of different approaches on the front door, most of which I wasn't very happy with. This one strikes me with its stark simplicity.
• I am my life - Week 1: "Something that represents You"- Almost everything changes with time... my hobbies, my possessions, even my appearance. There are some things that will never change... such as my family. We'll grow, and eventually we'll pass, but my wife and my kids will always be just that. Love to you all. (Jan 1-Jan 8: a self portrait without you in it (something that represents you))
• Now Boarding - Week 15: "Paper airplane"- I decided that my paper airplane needed paper people passengers.
• My Love - Week 14: "Think Small" - There's something small I carry with me everywhere, and with it comes big meanings both inside and out. I lit this with the trusty Novatron pack lights again, but the reflective metallic surface created some additional challenge. I used some white gobos to fill the reflections in the ring to help the lettering stand out clearly.
• New Beginnings - Week 13: New Beginnings
This week's theme is going to bring a lot of flower blossoms and sprouting greens for sure. I took a few of those photos myself this week, just to cover my bases. I also considered pictures things like people turning a new leaf in Las Vegas, children starting a new year of life, and other more abstract subjects for the photo. While talking with my wife today about the possibilities she mentioned that she had just started a new knitting project this weekend as well. I added a few shots of her new project to my considerations, and something about one of those struck it for me. So for my "new beginning" photo, I present the first full day of the next knitted sweater from my wife's talented hands.
• TIE Advanced - Week 12: On a Shelf - My son is really into Lego sets, and I have to admit that the today's Lego sets are a bit cooler than when I was a kid. Every now and then I'll even pick up a little something for myself, like this mini TIE Advanced fighter model. It sits on a shelf in my studio along with a few other models I have collected. I lit this shot using a single studio strobe with a long snoot on it to create the hard directional light as if it was flying towards a distant star. I also added the black cardboard behind the shelf as it works better for this shot than the white wall of my studio did.
• Lucky Me - Week 11: "My lucky something" - I really don't keep any kind of lucky charms to speak of, so when I came to this week's theme I really wasn't sure what to choose. My wife wears these Lucky brand jeans though, and I do feel pretty darn lucky to have such a good woman. So my lucky something... well, you know what it is.
• Week 9: Getting in Gear - For week nine's theme of "abstract" I turned to my trusty bicycle trainer for inspiration. I had a few ideas in my head all week, but I ended up choosing this shot that I took on a whim.
• Week 8: Laughing with the Droid - Week 8: Laughter. This week I present my daughter, with R2D2, at a hockey game. What could be more laughable than that? Not the best photo I've taken, but it was a moment worthy of meeting the "laughter" theme.
• Week 7: Novatron - Week 7's project theme was "light", and there are a lot of ways I could have gone with this one. Despite a few good days of shooting this week I didn't have anything that fit my ideas of light. I did have a few ideas in my head still and ended up executing on this one. A big part of my learning this year is going to be around using light in the studio, so these old Novatron pack lights have been seeing more attention lately. There are two more lights, one each on camera left and camera right, to light up the scene on this "main" light.
• Week 6: Ka-Chow - Week 6 - A movie or song title. I spent most of the week just trying to decide which movie to create a photo for and what that photo would be. James has been newly playing with these toys and especially Lighting McQueen, so when I saw "Cars" in our Netflix Queue I knew exactly what I need to do. For the hard light I used my pack strobes with a snoot on the main light and fills bounced off the wall to camera right.
• Week 5: I left my <3 in London - Week 5 - I left my heart
For week five's project this New Englander traveled to "Old" England for the first time ever. I had a couple opportunities to go take photos while I was there and I'm working my way through those sets picking and fixing my favorites. When I saw this photo, I knew it was the one to show exactly where I left my heart this week.
• Week 4: Just Incase - Week 3 - Your Favorite Thing
OK, setting things straight with the mixed up themes and doing my week 3 on week 4. Week's 3's theme was "my favorite thing", and it sounds like it was a challenge for many of us to narrow down the list to just one thing to shoot. After much deliberation I decided on my one thing, not so much for what it is but instead for what it represents. I present: my phone. Or should I just call it my mobile device? Either way, I love that my whole world is with me wherever I go. Everything I love... my family, photography, music, the outdoors... it's all linked in. The phone is a great little camera for when I don't have my rig with me, and I can even edit and share photos from my hand. (The best camera is the one you have with you!) I can communicate with friends and family a dozen different ways, from simple messages to live video conferences. I can easily find maps, reviews, recommendations for parks, coffee shops... I can even point my phone at distant hill-tops and have it label the peaks for me. I all the music I own, and way more than I could ever listen to, is available to stream to me at a moment's notice. Movies, television, and videos galore are equally as available. I can sell things, buy things, even find yard sales near my location. I can play games alone, against friends, or even play real-time with a table of strangers. It really is amazing all the things we can do from our mobile devices. So yeah, I love my phone and its sexy red case... but it's not about the device, it's about everything that it gives to me. Technical: shot on white using my pack lights, main off an umbrella and fill bounced off the wall. 1/200 @ f/11 ISO100
• Week 3: Me and My Hat - So... This weeks project theme is "my favorite thing". Next week's theme is "self portrait". Seems that I mixed the two up this week and did next week's project instead. While I could just go snap some random photo of an object or post some snapshot of the kids, I decided instead to just go with the inversion and do "my favorite thing" next week instead. While the subject this photo is less than stellar, I was in fact pretty happy with the "technicals" of the photo. I broke out the old pack lights for this did a high-key shot using a couple of tricks I picked up in a lighting workshop I recently attended. While the pack lights I have a nice, they're pretty dated and granular lack controls. I managed to get something I was happy with though, so here's my self portrait... for next week. I may not have "gotten creative" as suggested, but that fact that I managed to pull it off with two lights and a tripod in my not-yet-a-studio crammed office space I'm feeling creative enough! (Week 4 - A Self Portrait (Be Creative!))
• Week 10: Looking up - Been traveling all week for business but got a chance to visit the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta while I was out and about. Looking up from the bottom of the ocean as it would seem.
