Down the Flume - Week 25: "Looking down"<br />
<br />
This week I visited the Flume Gorge, located in New Hampshire's Franconia Notch State Park. I spent a lot of time looking up at the rocks and the water flowing down over them, but I did turn around once or twice to look back down at where I had been. I think it's ironic that in this photo I am looking down at a couple of other photographers who are busy looking up at the rocks and rushing water.

  • Against a Red Sky - Week 36: "Sunset"<br />
<br />
I happened upon this artificial sunset quite accidentally at the Boston Children's Museum this week. This silhouette is really the shadow of my son as he waits for an animated butterfly to land on his shadow on the projection screen. To our eyes the screen appeared to be all white save for the fluttering creatures, but under the speed of the camera we revealed a colorful refresh of the projection. When I saw this I immediately thought of an ocean sunset and knew I had my photo for this week's assignment.
  • Midnight at the Port of the Bay - Week 35: "Looking Out"<br />
<br />
From a recent stay in San Francisco CA... looking out over the Embarcadero and the Port of San Francisco ferry building, with the lights of the Oakland-San Francisco bridge and Alameda reflected in the water beyond. The tungsten lights add a golden hue that warms the night for the few people still walking about.
  • Fresh from the Farm - Week 34: "Vegetables"<br />
<br />
Fresh vegetables from the local farm were waiting on the kitchen table. A bit of soft side-light coming in from the door to the back yard. Opened up the lens wide and let the colors shine through.
  • Red Pepper - Week 33: "Red"<br />
<br />
Every year we try to grow some fresh vegetables in our modest garden. Some years are better than others. This year hasn't been great, but it did produce a few good peppers. Just wish I photographed that delicious hot red pepper the kids brought me before I ate it!
  • Cruizin' - Week 32: "Motion"<br />
<br />
Tried something new for this week's theme of "motion". I mounted my tripod in the back seat of my car and went out for an evening drive, camera remote in hand. Some pictures were more interesting than others but at least I got a few good ones. I asked my wife to help pick the most interesting one, and after moving sliders around in Lightroom for a while I ended with this for my submission. I wonder if I can get the tripod into the front seat next time...
  • Fishin' - Week 31: "Friendship"<br />
<br />
Being a parent is not always about being the parent... sometimes it's about being a friend. Captured this nice shot of a mother and son out fishing for an early morning catch on Sebec Lake in Dover-Foxcroft Maine.
  • Rowing - Week 30 "Water"<br />
<br />
I spent this past week in Austin Texas, and I got to spend a bit of time out on a boat on the waters of Lake Austin. This lake, a damned section of the Colorado River, traverses much of the downtown of the city itself. I am often impressed to see just how many people there are out enjoying the lake at any given time. Whether simply running along the shores or out for some serious rowing (like this man is doing), Lake Austin is clearly a well appreciated part of this city.
  • I can touch the bottom! - Week 29: "Summer"<br />
<br />
What can build summer memories more than going out to the dock at the summer house before breakfast and poking things in the water with a stick?
  • I lichen this to a stone - Week 28: "Texture"<br />
<br />
I found some beautiful texturing on the back of a gravestone recently. This day I was shooting my first funeral. It's not something that many people seek out as a service, but it's not unheard of either. We traveled all the way to Fair Haven NY for this one. I'll admit to being a week late in posting this, but it was shot during the 28th week.
  • Reflections of Food - Week 27: "Reflections"<br />
<br />
Lately I have been thinking a lot about the food that I eat, and the state of the food system in our country. Eating well has become more of a priority for me, and I'm thankful that we have a few good farms around us that are doing well and producing some great food for the families in my area. While local farms are nothing new, my love affair with them certainly is. Having discovered fresh food that has been grown for flavor and not for shipping has helped me to appreciate the good things that nature has to offer. So for this week's project photo, I am reflecting on my diet, on my health, and on returning to a healthier society.
  • Lemonade - Week 26: "Yellow"<br />
<br />
I caught my wife making lemonade with these nice yellow lemons. They quickly became my pick for this week's "yellow" theme, winning out over the yellow corn and my yellow garden hose.
  • Down the Flume - Week 25: "Looking down"<br />
<br />
  • Dragon Fly - Week 24 "Monster"<br />
<br />
I got lucky and happened upon this photogenic dragonfly while walking in the woods this week. It was pretty monstrous to begin with, and this close-up really shows that off.
  • Heads Up - Week 23 "Blue"<br />
Have you ever worked hard to take the shot you visualized and then ended up using a more random shot in the end? I took the kids to the rail trail so I could get a nice shot of our youngest on his new blue balance bike. The "blue" part was specifically important to him, and he was so excited about it, so I decided I was going to use it for this week's theme. The shot was all planned out... wide-angle, low, perspective, facing up to the sky, exposed to the skylight, and filled in with a Speedlite... I knew what I wanted. And I got it. But you know what? I like this random picture of our oldest's blue helmet better for this week's theme entry. Same day, same set-up, different subject, and it's all good.
  • Liberty at the Door - Week 22 "Memorial Day"<br />
<br />
There were many ideas tossed around for the Memorial Day theme, but sometimes you just have to go with what you have. I liked this giant American flag hanging at a friend's doorway and used it to fill this theme of remembrance.
  • Midnight Snack - Week 21 "In the Fridge"<br />
<br />
Seems like the kids are always sticking their heads in the fridge to see if anything has changed since the last time they did so. For this photo I used a speedlight with a radio trigger (1/32 or 1/64 power I think) placed on the bottom shelf of the fridge and pointed directly at my oldest son standing at the door.
  • Fair Flight - Week 20: "Jump"<br />
Two cub scouts jump in a field near a town fair. I took this shot following the town parade in which these scouts had just marched. There was a pretty big crowd of scouts and other people out of sight behind us, and one of them even sent me a "making of" type photo with me laying on the grass taking this photo.
  • Choose Your Weapon - Week 19: "Shoes"<br />
<br />
My wife and I have both recently stepped up our game when it comes to personal fitness. As with many sports, if you're going to do them seriously then you're probably going to buy some specialized footwear to get you through it. Here are our most recent investments in efficient feet.
  • Bicycle Train - Week 18: "Shadows" - I had the family out for a ride with the bicycle train in tow behind me. We had stopped at the end of the trail and I noticed our shadows mingling with the black tar patches on the pavement, so I took a few quick shots to add to my list of options for this week's entry. I made a few adjustments to really emphasize the darkness and contrast and I'm pretty happy with the way this came out.
  • Afternoon Fix - Week 17: "Coffee" - This week's theme is a very strong subject for me. I push myself hard every day, and regular infusions of caffeine are a welcome and part of my daily routine. For this week's photo I headed over to my favorite independent coffee house for a fresh hot latte and proceeded to shoot my mug as inconspicuously as possible. Well, I don't think anyone in the shop didn't notice me photographing my drink, but I did manage to take a variety of compositions without including any other patrons in the photos. I even got to drink most of it before the comforting warmth contained therein succumbed to air of this cool spring day. I shot this image at f/2.8 at close range to create the shallow DoF, bringing the focus to just the handle and a sliver of the foamy goodness floating on top.
